An artist responds…Trees Can Hear You

introduction written by the artist

“the poem trees can hear you introduced me to being locked in, and to be honest i found it to be unimaginable. from my own experiences of being in hospital, i know how scary that can feel. i faint when i have blood taken for tests.

somehow though, the poem made the unimaginable feasible/understandable. of the introduction words, i was drawn in by" i love nature". i too like to be outside, to do things, to walk, to sit, to listen to the natural world around me.

so when a residency made possible by east street arts in an empty shop in derby placed me in a space that i had locked myself into - i found myself becoming interested in how i might visualise the unimaginable.

i'll be honest with you, reading out loud is one of the most uncomfortable things for me. the original plan was to invite readings of the poem to work with. acknowledging the discomfort, i read the poem myself and the process began from there.”
